Neolitsea dealbata
Bolly Gum
Neolitsea dealbata
Neolitsea dealbata, commonly known as White Bollygum or White Bollywood, is an attractive evergreen tree native to the subtropical and warm temperate rainforests of eastern Australia. It typically grows to a height of 15-20 meters (50-65 feet) in its natural habitat, though it can be smaller in cultivation. A striking feature of this tree is its foliage: the upper surface of the leaves is glossy dark green, while the underside is distinctively silvery-white or rusty brown due to a dense layer of fine hairs, hence the species name 'dealbata' (meaning whitened). It produces small, inconspicuous yellowish-green flowers, followed by small, round, black, berry-like fruits that are attractive to birds. Valued for its ornamental qualities, it provides excellent shade and is a good choice for larger gardens or parks, particularly in frost-free or mildly frost-prone areas. It contributes significantly to biodiversity by providing food for native birds.

Pollination

Method: animal

Notes: Pollination is primarily carried out by insects, particularly bees, which are attracted to the small, inconspicuous flowers.

Watering Requirements

Method: Top watering

Frequency: When the top 2-3 inches of soil feel dry to the touch for young trees; mature trees are more drought-tolerant but benefit from regular watering during dry periods.

Notes: Ensure well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot. Deeper, less frequent watering is better for encouraging deep root growth in established trees.

Humidity Requirements

Level: Moderate to high

Maintenance: Naturally adapts to typical garden humidity in suitable climates. In drier environments, planting near other vegetation or maintaining good soil moisture can help increase local humidity. No specific misting or humidity trays are typically needed for an outdoor tree.

Care InstructionsNeolitsea dealbata is relatively low maintenance once established. Young trees should be protected from harsh frosts, which can damage new growth. Ensure adequate drainage as they do not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Regular mulching benefits soil health and moisture retention. Pruning is generally not required for shape but can be done to remove dead or diseased branches.

Cultivars

Syzygium australe
scrub cherry
Syzygium australe
Both are native to similar rainforest environments in Australia and share similar light, water, and soil preferences, allowing them to coexist harmoniously. Syzygium australe can provide a lower canopy or shrub layer, complementing the larger Neolitsea dealbata and enhancing the rainforest garden aesthetic.
Gahnia sieberiana
Red-fruit Saw-sedge
Gahnia sieberiana
As a native clumping sedge, it can serve as an excellent ground cover, helping to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture around the base of the Neolitsea dealbata. It thrives in similar dappled light and moist soil conditions often found beneath or near larger trees.
Oceaniopteris cartilaginea
hammock fern
Oceaniopteris cartilaginea
This native fern is well-suited for the understory of a Neolitsea dealbata, appreciating the partial shade and consistent moisture. It helps maintain the high humidity levels preferred by the tree and adds a lush, tropical feel to the planting.
Lophostemon confertus
Brush Box
Lophostemon confertus

While also a native Australian tree, Brush Box is a very vigorous and fast-growing species with a dense root system. If planted too close to a young Neolitsea dealbata, it can aggressively compete for water and nutrients, potentially stunting the growth or health of the less vigorous Neolitsea.

Ficus macrophylla
Moreton Bay fig
Ficus macrophylla

The Moreton Bay Fig is a massive tree with an extremely expansive and powerful root system. If planted in proximity, its roots would severely outcompete Neolitsea dealbata for available water and nutrients, making it very difficult for the Neolitsea to establish and thrive.

Aphids

Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that cluster on new growth, young leaves, and flower buds. They feed by sucking sap from the plant, leading to distorted or curled leaves, stunted growth, and the excretion of sticky honeydew, which can attract sooty mold. Heavy infestations can weaken the plant.

Scale Insects

Scale insects appear as small, stationary bumps on stems and the undersides of leaves. They are sap-sucking pests that, like aphids, excrete honeydew. Symptoms of infestation include yellowing leaves, stunted growth, branch dieback, and the presence of sooty mold growing on the honeydew.

Steps:

    • Collect ripe berries from the tree, typically when they turn black.
    • Clean the seeds thoroughly by removing all pulp from the fruit. This is crucial as the pulp can inhibit germination.
    • Sow seeds into a well-draining seed-raising mix or a blend of sand and compost.
    • Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of mix, about the depth of the seed's diameter.
    • Keep the seed tray consistently moist but not waterlogged, and place it in a warm, sheltered location out of direct harsh sun.
    • Germination can be slow and irregular, sometimes taking several months.
    • Once seedlings are large enough to handle, carefully transplant them into individual pots.
    • Grow on in a sheltered spot, gradually acclimatizing them to outdoor conditions before planting into their final position.

Composted Bark Mulch

Applied around the base of the tree, mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, suppress weeds, and slowly release nutrients as it breaks down, mimicking its natural rainforest environment.

Worm Castings

A natural, nutrient-rich soil amendment that improves soil structure, aeration, and water retention, while providing a slow release of essential nutrients to support healthy growth.

Neem Oil Spray

An organic insecticide and fungicide effective against common pests like aphids and scale insects. It works by disrupting their feeding and reproductive cycles. Apply as a foliar spray according to product instructions.

Mycorrhizal Fungi Inoculant

Promotes a beneficial symbiotic relationship with the plant's roots, enhancing nutrient and water uptake, and improving overall plant vigor and resilience, especially important during establishment.
