Cultivars
This prickly pear cactus grows rapidly and can quickly outcompete the Ferocactus latispinus for resources such as water and sunlight.
Small, often immobile insects that suck sap from the cactus. Symptoms include yellowing or browning patches, and a sticky substance called honeydew. Infestations can weaken the plant and lead to secondary infections.
Soft-bodied, white, cottony insects that feed on the plant's sap. They often hide in crevices and can cause yellowing, stunted growth, and sooty mold. Severe infestations can severely damage the plant.
Steps:
- Collect seeds from mature plants.
- Sow seeds in a well-draining cactus mix.
- Keep the soil slightly moist until germination.
- Allow seedlings to grow for a year or two before transplanting.
- Some plants produce offsets (small clones).
- Carefully detach offsets from the parent plant.
- Allow the offset to callus over for a week.
- Plant the offset in a well-draining cactus mix.
